Staff Tuesday: Lindsay

Happy Tuesday! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Are you all ready to feast away on Thanksgiving? I know I am... the boss lady normally stops by and drops off a piece of turkey for me but she's laying on the beach in Mexico... So, hopefully, one of my minions will drop off something yummy for me..

Well it's Tuesday and I've been itching to tell you about one of my newest minions.

So without further Kitty-a-due I introduce to you Lindsay!
~ Also know as the New Girl ~

Lindsay started working here last month and I love her already.. She gives me just the right amount of attention every day she is in.

Lindsay was born on September 11th 1989... Again another September baby! [Meow..all my minions were born in September it seems.]

Lindsay likes to ride around woodland with her best friend. Lindsay has a cruiser that she doesn't feel she gets to ride enough!

Lindsay says "Riding is way more fun than walking!" I agree with her, I wish I could be wheeled around in a pet basket all day!

An interesting fact about Lindsay: She's scared of tape and stickers... better remember to never bring any of those around her.

I also just want to mention that you should keep any eye out for the fantastic sales coming up for Black Friday and Small Business Saturday! I know the ladies in the office have been crunching numbers and preparing to offer everyone some great prices..

Tune in next week for the new weekly items for both stores, a glance at our 12 days of Christmas specials and of course another Staff Tuesday!!!

Till then, I leave you with a thought from Lindsay: "What was is not what will be. Let hope light your path in life's journey and it will set you free !"

Staff Tuesdays: Caitlin

Happy Tuesday! I hope everyone had a wonderful week. I had a relaxing weekend, although I did have to tell the Mechanics to pick up the pace a bit. It's our busy season in the repair center and man-oh-man there are a lot of bicycles to weave through in the shop.

But hey, it's Tuesday and it's time to learn about another one of my darling minions... CAITLIN! Caitlin makes me MEOWWWW!!!!
Go Girl Go!  Caitlin during one of the Triathlon events for UC Davis!

Caitlin has worked for B&L for about 5 months now... she works on the B&L Too side!

She was born on October 10th, 1991. A belated Happy Birthday is in order for her!

Caitlin has 2 bicycles and a new one on the way. She currently owns a Beach Cruiser and an 80's Road Bike named Claudia. [Yes she named her bicycle!] Now, she has a 2012 Fuji Finest 1.0 on the way!

When asked what she likes about riding bikes, she says, “It's fun and exhilarating not to mention great exercise!”

An interesting fact about Caitlin: She's been riding dirt bikes [meow.. dirt bikes..?] since she was 4 years old. She has broken many bones while tearing up the track. [meow...poor thing..I'll stick to promoting regular bikes]

So there you have it, my second Tuesday Staff Pick! Stop by my corner next week to learn about the next minion under my spell.

Till then, I leave you with Caitlin's Favorite quote: "Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom" - Aristotle

Milo's Movie Review

Hi Everybody! I didn't mean to neglect you over the last week. Blogger has been glitchy and my scribe was away from the shop for a few days. What could possibly be more important than taking down and reporting my every thought and word? [Nothing Milo, absolutely nothing] That's what I . . . hey, is that sarcasm I detect? Anyhow, May is Bike Month is halfway over and Mother nature seems to be testing our bicycling fortitude like no other. What happened to shorts and May Flowers? Hmmm??

Even with chilling winds beating at our spokes, we saw a lot of friendly, commuting folks in the wee hours of the morning at Bike to Work day last week. The girls woke up bright and early to hand out water bottles with special shop discounts inside, meet marvelous, local commuters, and raffle off free stuff!

Thanks for coming out and hanging with us!

Milo's Makeover Monday Rachelle Edition

Rachelle is one of the cool girls over at B & L Too and she's fairly new to cycling. She is, however, hard core enough to show up at the shop at 7:30am for that Saturday group ride that no one else shows up for. C'mon guys, where you at?

Anyhow, the other day she let me play dress up and this is the snazzy number we came up with:

On Top: Black and Aqua Cyclone Tank by Canari (w/ a built in shelf bra)
On Bottom: Awesome black Knickers by Canari

I see lots of different types of riders come into the shop and each one enjoys cycling for a different reason. Some are into racing and sprinting to speeds up to 40 miles per hour, while others enjoy a beach cruiser for trips to the movie theater. Since Rachelle is new to cycling, we set her up with some cute, fitness oriented clothing. She can use the tank for other activities, like walking her insanely happy dog Maia, and the knickers as well, so long as they're padless (no one wants to play ultimate frisbee wearing a bike diaper).

Where's your helmet young lady?
Success! Another job well done. If you come in and want to get this whole outfit, I'll get the boss lady to take 10% off! P.S. We're already having a huge sale right now that I'll tell you about tomorrow!!!

Milo's Makeover Monday: Hydrate or Die Edition

Good Meow-orning! So, the weather is beginning to warm up and I want everyone to remember one, very important thing: Hydrate or Die.

Seriously Guys! Proper hydration could be the difference between a happy, healthy spring and summer or days of nausea and fatigue. I'll take the former thank you very much. We've all probably heard that you humans should drink about 8 glasses of water to replenish what you've lost throughout the day. If you're riding your bicycle, like you should be, you'll need more water.

So for this installment of Makeover Monday I'd like to encourage you guys and gals to get out there and get hydrated! Accessorize with a snazzy new water bottle! We have lots of cool new Camelbak bottles for school, work, or an afternoon around town. We even just got some in that have a filter inside the straw in case you're like me and don't enjoy the traditional taste of Davis water. We have Klean Kanteens too.  One of our staff even has one that's been run over by a car and is still used to this day!
So remember: Hydration is Sexy. Accessorize people! I want to see this closet of overstock empty by June.

Atta Boy Roy!

Happy Monday! Today I want to brag a little about my buddy Roy. Not only does he give some of the best belly-rubs, but he's doing some awesome things on two wheels these days. We sat down the other day in B & L too and talked about his most recent philanthropic adventure.

Can you give me a brief summary of what you do? I ride tandem bikes with visually impaired students at the Halten Center in San Pablo, California.

Who drives? I’m going to pretend you didn’t ask me that.

What goes on at the center? The center operates to help students [ages range from 18-22] transition towards living independently. They help them learn how to use public transit, practice cane skills, build maps in their head, work through financial advising, cooking etc.

What’s your purpose with the tandem riding? It’s mostly just to get the kids some exercise and fresh air. I think it helps that I’m not asking anything of them. I’m there to take them out, get ‘em some air, and have a good time.

How did you get hooked up with this gig? Well, the first reason is that my fiancé happens to work there.  They have some tandem bicycles that needed to be fixed and I was volunteered for the job.  While I was there, I found a brand new bike and my immediate thought was “Can I use this?!” They said yes and I started taking the students on rides. Although, it was my first time riding a tandem and they, the students, had to tell me what to do.

What has been challenging about doing these rides? Initially, most of the students haven’t been on a bike before. For some, pedaling is a brand new concept. The difficulty arises in having to explain everything verbally and without any visual cues whatsoever. It sounds fairly simple, until you try it.

What have you learned about other humans by doing this besides that they should give Cats more treats?  I have learned that there’s no way to guess who’s going to be excited about what.  One student that appeared lackluster in attitude and lacking in physical activity became incredibly excited about hills. Then there’s the silent girl who keeps coming back every single week.  In short, I guess, I’d say I’ve learned that people are surprising. And it’s interesting to see what they pay attention to. They notice changes in the material we’re riding on, the temperature, or the scent of the air. To hear the girl behind me announce that we’re passing through a Eucalyptus grove without being able to see it is really cool.

What have you learned about yourself? Again, besides the fact that more treats for Cats could equal world happiness. I’ve learned that I’m a sucker for helping people and that means my soul might be redeemed after all.

Have you had any interesting adventures? One time I took the tandem mountain biking.

Wait, you have a tandem Mountain bike? Nope.

What happened? Well, I was riding on a road that was supposed to be paved and then it wasn’t. The road turned into dirt, worse dirt, and, finally, mud. The great thing is that the students are always up for anything and it’s awesome.

So, when will you incorporate tandem rides with cats? I’ll take you out with the dog next week if you’d like?

No thanks!

Well I'm definitely impressed by Roy and the incredible adventurousness of the students at the center. Next week Roy will be riding in the Cycle4Sight ride in Napa next week with co-pilot Erika (pictured above) on the tandem.

Go Get 'Em Roy!

Bikes = Happy . . . duh!

While the staff was busy deodorizing after their rides in and opening up the shops, I perused Bicycling's website for some interesting tidbits to send your way. This morning I stumbled upon a bit about a study recently put out by Bowling Green State University. According to the report, "As little as 10 minutes of cycling improved the mood among 21 men and women, compared to a similar group who did nothing during that time." Bicycling

It's official: Biking can make you feel better.

So get pedaling friends!!

Come by B & L Too and tell us if this is true for you and feel free to bring me treats.

Question of the post: What sorts of emotions do you experience when riding your bike?

Milo's Lonely Saddles Club

Hey Gang! So, it's Saturday and the weather has been absolutely gorgeous. I hope everyone is taking advantage of the warmth and sunshine by getting out and riding their bikes. If not, shame shame on you.

This morning two very cute girls sat outside of B & L at 7:30am hoping that some of you guys would come out to ride with them. Did you? Nope, not a one. Same thing happened with Christy and Emelia a few weeks ago.

I know the flyer says 20 miles, but really it probably won't be that long of a ride since Emelia has to open the store at 9am and look a little less ragamuffin-y and she's definitely out of shape [HEY!]. I only speak the truth. This was Rachelle's first real-ish ride and she did marvelous on the little 12 mile jaunt.

Just so you know, the girls told me that the quiet countryside was positively gorgeous this morning even in their bleary-eyed state. While you slumbered and sawed, Rachelle and Emelia pedaled about and topped the morning off with coffee and pastries from the farmer's market. When Emelia wasn't looking I snagged a bit of her strawberry and cream cheese danish and it was delicious! [YOU DID WHAT?!?!] Finder's keeper's, sucker.

Follow my/"our"Twitter or become a follower of the blog (you know you want to be one of my minions) and be updated on shop rides, routes, and news. Next week, I expect to see more of you in front of the shop next Saturday so that these frowns will be turned upside down.

Christy and Emelia sad to be riding "totawee awone"
P.S. Feel free to bring me cheese danishes and some tortillas with mango chutney and some of that funky green spread when you're done.

Milo's Makeover Monday

Bonjourno! It's a beautiful California Spring morning and all I have to say is that it's about stinking time. Now that mother nature has gotten with the program I figured it's time I begin my new weekly segment. Every Monday I'm going to introduce you all to something related to look and style in the bike world. This segment is inspired by our fashionably challenged staff at B & L. Just because we live and work in an industry overwhelmed with spandex and Lycra doesn't mean we can't look good doing it. As many of you may know, I'm quite the fashionista. Have you seen my lion cut? They don't call me ferociously fabulous for nothing. For our first installment I'd like to introduce everyone to my new find today!

This morning, Emelia, clumsy and fashion challenged fool that she is, left this thing on the counter that looked like it belonged back in the shop. As it turns out, what appeared to be a bunch of bike tires at first glance is actually a super sweet bag that was MADE out of bike tires. It was so cool that I made her get online that moment and research where this nifty thing came from [ya know, one of these days I'm going to make you do your own research and I take offense at being called fashionably challenged!] Hush Human! This if for your own good!

The bag is made by an incredible company called Totally Tubular Design. The company was started by one of our own UCD Grads, Lauren Junker (formerly Lauren Robertson). According to their website, "Started in 2006 by Lauren Junker, Totally Tubular Design is dedicated to using as much trash as possible to create the coolest products possible. For a girl who hates seeing things go to waste, the perfect project for Lauren was to combine artistic skills with a STRONG desire to help the environment. By enlisting the help of local bike shops Lauren was able to create a line of products that are 100% reused."

All of their products are made from recycled inner and outer bike tubes and lined with car upholstery. From the bike shop to the catwalk, Totally Tubular Design is eco-friendly out the wazoo and is locally recycled and made just over a hill in Santa Cruz, Ca.
.
What's not to love? Now, I just have to figure out how to get my paws on one without the boss lady finding out.[MILO!!!]
Uh, oh! Gotta go right MEOW!

Kitty Lion trumps Elephant any day

It's tough being King of the Urban Jungle, but someone has to take charge of this pride. My word is usually everyone's command, but lately competition has been rising up in the land of  B & L. A colossal, blue creature is roaming the back rooms of B & L and the staff quakes with fear of the unknown. She sits on bicycles, waiting to be repaired and dares the staff to cross her path.

Upon further investigation, we have deduced that the creature is an elephant of the hephalump family. We have yet to name her, but here she stays. So, I'm writing today to beg your assistance . . . what should we do with this strange creature? She's bike friendly, and I've tamed her over the course of the last few months.
Now, the question is . . . what do we do with her? Any ideas?

Ladies Night and Sales of Self-Defense

Top of the Mornin’ to Ya!
Ladies Night was a wild success and I received more belly-rubs than any lion, I mean cat, knows what to do with. I just wanted to get on here between nap number seven and eight to say a big thank you to everybody at B & L and Susan Ashdown for all their hard work. Over $500 was raised for the Nor Cal Aids ride and Judith Givens walked away with a brand new Cidi 3 commuter bicycle.  Another big thank you everyone who stopped by for the festivities. I had an absolute blast and loved celebrating Saint Patty’s day with all the lovely ladies and daring gentlemen who joined us yesterday evening.I'm still full and a bit tipsy from the cheese, crackers, chocolate and wine tasting. If you had half as much fun as me we can count this as a job well done. Unfortunately, not everyone was as happy as me when all was ended.

Despite threats, no kilt-clad, wig-wearing, or falsetto speaking men showed up to brave the swell seas of estrogen. My legal council has informed me that due to riotous swarms of disgruntled men, who felt snubbed by the gender specific event, it would be wise to extend our special sales for the rest of the weekend. In the spirit of good will and general merriment, I say YES!

SALE SALE SALE!!

So, this fabulous feline would like to invite one and all of all shapes, sizes, and plumbing back to B & L and B & L Too for more specials.

Take a break from the rain and come check out our sweet deals. Our sales staff is lonesome and we never want anyone to feel left out!

P.S. Gentlemen, your time will come too I promise.
